“If you believe in goodness and if you value the
approval of God, fix your minds on the things which are holy and right and pure
and beautiful and good”. – Philippians 4: 8
SO, I prayed about what to write
about today and the words were imprinted in my thoughts: “The beauty of life”. Yes, but there is so much going on in
the world to intrude and distract us from the beauty of life. Paul knew that
when he wrote to the Philippians. He said, with tears in his eyes, that there
were many who were the enemies of Christ and were headed for destruction. “Their
god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things…”. Christians, on the other
hand, were citizens of heaven, eagerly awaiting the return of Christ. They
would do best, he advised, “to fix your minds on the things which are holy
and right and pure and beautiful and good.” The best, not the worst; things
to praise, not things to curse.
Is that possible amid today’s
bombardment of cynical social media, false news, crime and moral decay? Of
course; the essence of a beautiful life is the Good News, the gospel. We can
deal with the rest in the knowledge that by the grace of God we are safe in
Christ and should try every day to fill our lives with things that are lovely, pure,
kind and deserving of praise.
