“So Jesus called them together and said…Whoever
wants to be a leader among you, must be your servant…For even the Son of Man
came not to be served but to serve others…” Mark 10: 43 - 45
ONE of the reasons the Holy Spirit is called the Helper is because
it instils in us the tendency to want to love and help others. Christianity is
not about just being religious and letting God improve us. We must never lose
sight of the inspiration that true Christianity is loving God and helping Him
to help those who are needy. The Spirit is with us to help us overcome a human
tendency to seek our own recognition because of the good things we do, and to act
holier-than-thou. That bad-bad religious spirit can fool us into think we’re
indispensable, and that’s the beginning of becoming lukewarm about the power of
God’s love that saves us and strengthens us. We are called to
serve because it’s Jesus’s way – to serve others.
