“All athletes are disciplined in their
training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an
eternal prize.” - 1 Corinthians 9: 25
I AM sure many of us were moved to see
Tatjana Schoenmaker giving thanks to God (she said He had exceeded all her
expectations) after storming to a gold medal and a world record in the Olympic
Games pool. I certainly found it inspiring, and it guided me to the scripture
above. It made me realize that just as Olympians need to be dedicated to their
training, so Christians must be disciplined in striving to achieve God’s Word and
earn a place on His podium. The occasional jog with God isn’t enough. Following
Christ is more than just a run in the park and a weekly visit to church; we
need to be dedicated to a lifestyle of loving discipline and spiritual fitness if
we are to win His everlasting medal.
