"LORD, remind me how brief
my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered — how fleeting my
life is." - Psalm 39:4
SO today I got a reminder (as requested in the scripture above) that
life is brief. I was waiting for my wife outside the local super market when it
came out of the blue, so to speak. Two young working men in blue overalls came
out of the shop and one shouted to the other: “Life is too short man – don’t
waste any of it!” What prompted this bit of wisdom I know not, but it set me
thinking. We mustn’t waste it, but how can we make the most of what we’ve got
left. I turned to scripture; Ephesians 5: 15 - 16 says: “Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most
of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly but
understand what the Lord wants you to do.”
Paul goes on to give practical advice on different important aspects of
life. But that is the essence: 1) “Don’t
act thoughtlessly…” - let the things of God occupy your mind and your
remaining days. 2) “Understand what the
Lord wants you to do…”- be guided by God’s Word and His Holy Spirit. That’s
the good life, however long it may be.
