Life's tick bites

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” – John 16: 33

A YOUNG man I know well took a gap year as a game ranger. While tracking animals on foot he was bitten by ticks and became dogged by tick bite fever. But he stuck to the advice of his ranger elders and suffered through repeated fevers without medication so his body could build up immunity to the toxins. It worked! He was immune and enjoyed a memorable stay in the bush .
More importantly, he learned there is a spiritual equivalent. Becoming a Christian didn’t suddenly make him immune to life’s troubles. Like ticks in the bush, troubles bit deep, notably in his business endeavours. But he didn’t resort to the placebos of fear and desperation. Instead he placed his trust in Jesus by enduring the worldly toxins with God at his side. God can develop immunity to trouble’s side effects in all of us through faith that God overcomes.
