Not on your own

“How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” – Galatians 3: 3

TRYING really hard to live in a manner that might please God is good; we must battle on. If we forget to care about how we live we can backslide into bad habits. But the real danger is to forget that it was by hearing the Word of God, by believing it and starting to live by faith in Christ – and no longer fooling ourselves that we were self-sufficient – that the Spirit within us changed.

No more than we alone could have produced our spiritual re-birth – being born again – can we rely just on our human genes to progress and produce the spiritual strength, growth and maturity needed to carry the light of God through the pitfalls, temptations and dangers of the gathering darkness of this world. Only by living in faith, continuing to hear His Word, and relying on the Spirit of Christ can our hope flourish and be perfected, come whatever else may.
